The origins of the name Kottayam is in the words 'Kotta Akam' in
Malayalam, meaning 'inside the fort'. The kings of Thekkumkur, an
independent little kingdom to which Kottayam belonged, ruled their
domain with Thazhathangadi as their capital, a location in the
present day Kottayam. In the mid-18th century, Marthanda Varma of
Travancore dynasty annexed Thekkumkur, the Kottayam area, along with
the areas of the rest of what constitute today's Kottayam District
which then became part of the Kingdom of Travancore. |
